Atiz BookDrive Book Scanner Features

 V-shaped Book Cradle

All Atiz BookDrive book scanners use a unique V-shaped auto-adjusting book cradle and platen.  This V-shaped solution performs a functions. 

  • Firstly, it holds the book open at a non-stressful angle so the book spine suffers no damage. 

  • Then, it holds the pages so that each capture is flat and natively curvature free.  This hugely improves OCR conversion rates to near 99%. 

  • The cradle's self-adjusting nature moves the book gently to the left to accommodate the "margin crawl" caused  by the thickness of each page ensuring each page is correctly centred in the scan. 

  • It ensures minimal handling of precious originals

  • Finally, the movement of the cradle when each page is turned can be used to trigger the cameras to capture each page.  This improves productivity and eliminates operator strain.

Digital SLR Cameras

The use of digital SLR cameras gives several benefits:

  • Affordable - DSLRs are much cheaper than the capture devices used in other book scanner while giving the same quality of scan.

  • Upgradeable - you simply change the current camera base for one with a higher megapixel rating.  No other changes are needed and you can do it yourself eliminating the cost and delay of an engineer call-out.

  • Low maintenance - the cameras need no on-going servicing or maintenance

  • Low power consumption - the battery chargers or mains power supply use a few tens of watts.

Easy-to-use

You simply turn the pages and the cameras capture the pages automatically.  If you want to repeat a page scan you can simply replace the existing page.  If you skip a page and need to insert it later the software will automatically re-number the subsequent pages.

Low Maintenance

Each BookDrive is inherently low-maintenance.  There are few moving parts, unlike scanners with complex page turning systems, on the robust steel frame and the lamps are long-life LED units.

LED Lighting

The proprietary cold LED lighting system on both front and rear of the scanner ensures that your images have even bright illumination across the surface with no glare even on glossy materials.

Double-page spread scan

Double-page spread - a layout that covers two facing pages in a magazine or newspaper. If such a layout is featured in the centre of the magazine or newspaper, it is called a centre spread.  BookDrive N is designed for situations where you want to scan double-page spread images of a book, magazine or similar documents.

Adjustable cradle

The adjustable cradle has an internal mechanism to support and protect the bindings of your books as well as providing a flattening effect for both sides of the page.

400dpi resolution

Resolution depends on image sensor used and the size of the page that is being scanned.  The image sensor (CCD in the camera) of the Pentax 645D has a fixed resolution of 7264x5440 pixels (approx 40megapixels).  So, scanning an A3 document (11.6" x !6.5") will give you a resolution of 7264/16.5 = 440 dpi.

dots/inch or DPI

In the context of scanning, DPI or PPI is the pixel density of an image or specifically "by how many pixels per inch is my document being recorded?".

To calculate for the DPI (pixel density) of your document being photographed by a camera, divide the number of pixels in length and width by the document length and width in inches.

For example, if you use a Canon 5D Mark II cameras (5616 x 3744 pixels) to scan an A4 paper (11.69" x 8.27") equals: 
= 5616 / 11.69 and 3744 / 8.27
= 480.41 and 452.72

So the true DPI of this scanned image is 452 DPI (using the lower number).
